UPSC Civil Services Eligibility, Exam Pattern, Selection Process & Important Dates:


The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the Civil Services Examination (CSE) annually to recruit candidates for various civil service positions in the Government of India, including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and Indian Police Service (IPS).

Eligibility:

  • Candidates must be a citizen of India
  • Age limit: 21-32 years (age relaxation for certain categories)
  • Educational Qualification: Bachelor's degree from a recognized university

Exam pattern:


The CSE consists of three stages:


  • Preliminary Examination: This is a multiple-choice question (MCQ) based exam comprising two papers: General Studies (GS) and Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT). The GS paper tests candidates on current affairs, Indian and world history, geography, economics, polity, and general science. The CSAT paper tests candidates on their decision-making abilities, problem-solving skills, communication skills, and analytical abilities.

  • Main Examination: This is a written exam comprising nine papers, including two qualifying papers (one on Indian languages and one on English) and seven papers on various subjects such as history, geography, law, economics, public administration, sociology, and so on.

  • Interview: This is a personality test conducted by a panel of experts. It is designed to assess the candidates' suitability for a career in the civil services.

Selection process:

  • Candidates who qualify the preliminary examination are eligible to appear for the main examination.
  • The main examination is followed by an interview.
  • The final selection is based on the marks obtained in the main examination and the interview.

Important dates:

  • The notification for the CSE is usually released in February/March, and the exam is conducted in August/September.
  • The results of the preliminary examination are announced in October/November, and the main examination results are announced in May/June.
  • The final results are announced in August/September.
